The practical differences

Tie-on square

A square folds into a triangle and the ends form a removable knot. The fold and knot use part of the original fabric length, so compare the finished square measurement and allow room for tying.

Over-collar channel

A sewn channel slides over a separate collar. Check both the channel opening and the collar hardware dimensions; a neck measurement alone does not prove compatibility.

Adjustment

A tie-on style changes with the fold and knot. An over-collar style follows the adjustment range and width of the separate collar passing through it.
